Seven deadly sins

Our forefathers told us of the dangerous sins of old. They draw us into a trap, blind us. There is no respite, no escape, they said.

sins? escape? Why, though?

vanity. It makes you proud of yourself. How can you spend your whole life with someone if you are not madly in love with him?

envy. It makes you desire what you do not have. It makes you work to improve yourself to the point which you consider the best in the world.

sloth. It buys you time. It lets you dream. It forces you to think. It lets you sort out and understand the webs around you.

lust. Appreciation of physical beauty in its raw form is one of the most natural of all human tendencies. It electrifies our senses, makes them come alive.

greed. It makes you want more than you have. It dissolves boundaries, helps the world grow and stops it from stagnating.

wrath. There is helplessness, fury, desire for vengeance within us, hidden, waiting to burst. It provides a path for the poison to flow out.

gluttony. It gives instant gratification, at the very peak of longing. It is among the richest of indulgences, for those who have none at all.

Now, love, that is a sin. It snatches what is closest to us, it gives us that which we desire not. It makes us wealthy, with dreams and elation. It pains, it tantalizes, it stings. It is sweet. It is wicked. It is a two faced villain.

Amen.

Yeah, and I am the devil incarnate. :P

Interesting twist on things. Wonder wat drove u to write abt these...!

Despite the "noble" intentions, it appeared tht u were pressed for arguments and they were either repeated (envy and greed) or weak (wrath). Then again, its not easy to justify these things when we have been taught differently thruout our life :)

A sin is a sin seen in any light. :D Shit. I dont have anything else to comment on this :D

@Abhishek
wat drove me... facebook quizzes ;D

u caught me at the wrong points :(
i scoured many sources to get dat distinction, i'm sure u'd knw ;P
and abt that credit, let me hereby say that it was pichkari himself who co-authored (along with me) the points on envy and greed ;P
:D

@PritS
:)
like begets like.
:P

Well, whoever this pichkari is... he shud be hanged for his poor insights. Although, are you sure it was pichkaari that offered both of these...? I mean, he/she sure does sound like an interesting person...

i second that motion. pichkari gave one reason which i attributed to envy and he to greed, hence leading to confusion.
:P

interesting, umm err *looks here n there*

sigh .. i wish i had more time right now but since i don't let me just support ur theory a lil bit before i lambast it later on in d evenin ;p

envy and greed are by no means similar .. at least goin by the definitions you urself hav given...envy is to want sumthin u dun hav ... while greed is to want more of what u already hav.... to not hav a car .. nd to want to own one after u see ur neighbour's is prolly envy but to hav a car and still want more... not satisfied wid juz one .. well dat is greed.. innit ? :\ so how come dey get repeated..

Serpentine said...

sigh! they are not repeated!!

let me quote...
envy. It makes you desire what you do not have.
greed. It makes you want more than you have.
:D

i wait for you to lambast ;)

suteerth said...

sigh again ... i waz referrin to someone else who thought they were and i quote "and they were either repeated (envy and greed)"

so much for comin to the rescue :|
u gave in widout a fight at that .. m havin second thoughts abt lambastin ur theory .. wun be much fun if u give in similarly :\

Serpentine said...

i dint give in widout a fight x( ... i dint even touch on dat part! i wont extend d argument any further, but i think the distinction is pretty obvious!!!

n do not even think of having second thoughts, i will kill you.
;P

okie heres a teaser

startin wid envy ... envy is not just desirin wot others hav but wishin the other person to be deprived of it, its about being unhappy for another's happiness .. thats wot envy truly means ... if it wer only desire nd nuthin else ... it wud perhaps been of some good .. but being unhappy for someones elses good fortune nd wantin him to get deprived of it certainly does u or nyone else no good ... nd rightly it falls under the 7 deadly sins..

I would disagree with u on a small detail, rather than wanting that person to not have whatever it is u want, i would simply not care whether he has it or not, after all how many ppl wud be there in the world who do have it and i cant be concerned about all of them (and their happiness)

u r not unhappy with them having it, u r unhappy with u not having it

the only thing that would bite me would be that I do not have it when it so obviously pleases me, and i wud try to get it and once i have it i would no longer care whether others have it or not... i wud be happy for and pleased with myself

thus envy wud let u get something u previously did not have and badly wanted, so it cannot be a sin

Additionally, I think a primary reason why these 7 were classified as sins is that they induce feelings within us that have a negative connotation (they seem to suck something from us rather than give us a sense of peace)

but if u look at the results they produce, almost all of them give us something we crave for, and whats wrong with desire

Essentially, they stem from desire, so to some extent it is a question of classifying desire or good or evil

suteerth said...

u r strippin envy of ol its negative virtues leavin behind only the desire which u insinuate .. but the envy u r talkin abt sans d negativity is not envy at all ... u cannot say envy for me does not hav any place for negativity ...envy is what it is WITH all the negativity as has been defined...

as oxford defines it ...
envy †malice; feeling of ill will at another's well-being. XIII. — (O)F. envie , semi-pop. — L. invidia malice, ...

filter out all the pollutants from polluted air and what you are left with is pure air ... no longer harmful ... will u still call it as polluted air ? no .. u cant ... it loses its right to be called polluted after ol d filterin dat u do .. likewise ... envy loses the right to be called envy after ol d tailorin u did on it ...

Serpentine said...

let me say is again, envy is the feeling of unhappiness and restlessness which arise when u dont have something u see with another and u strongly desire it... so what u feel is totally negative

like i said in the post before yours, envy, like most other sins, produces negative feelings within u, what i am arguing about is that it leads to a positive end result

Well written, but that you do not believe completely in what you write can be seen. That I don't quite like from the writing point of view, though it does make me feel a tad more sure that you might be normal.
:)
Cheers.
